My two kitties went missing from my friends farm. Last seen in Ashville/Mayville NY on 7/28 This passed Friday. Both are spayed/neutered. Tabby is Mink/Minky & the white is Sasha/Sashie. If seen/found please call me 716-948-6263. They are very friendly, Mink is a bit shy but Sasha will come right up to you. Mink will for food! Thank you!

Pets of the Week

This week we are featuring “Buddy” and “Wilber”. Buddy is a 3 year old spitfire that LOVES to play fetch and run as fast as his short little legs will let him. His new family needs older kids only and no cats. He can get a little nervous when meeting new people so he should meet everyone in the family. Wilber is a 7 year old short hair kitty. He is a friendly, older gent that absolutely loves all the attention he can get. He does well with other cats. If either of these pets sounds like the right one for you, please stop in at the Strunk Road Adoption Center and ask to meet them. You will be glad you did! For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

“Tomack” and “Oscar”. Tomack is a lovable oaf that needs to get plenty of exercise. His biggest joy is to run and play. He doesn’t like to share his food or treats so a home with older kids would be best. Oscar is a wonderful kitty that is looking for his forever home. He is looking for a family that will play with him but also cuddle when play time is over. If either of these pets sounds like the one for you, please stop in at the Strunk Road Adoption Center and ask to meet them. You will be glad you did.

“Tomack” and “Daisy”. Tomack is a fun loving, no holds barred 2 year old lab mix. He is ready to go, go, go! He would do best in a family with older kids as he doesn’t like to be bothered when eating or having a snack. Daisy is a sweet 6 year old cat that is ready for a home to call her own. She is very loving and would be a great friend to just about anyone. If either of these pets sounds like the perfect addition to your family, please stop in at the Strunk Road Adoption Center and ask to meet them. You could be the answer to their Christmas wishes. For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

“Chinola” and “Lumpy”. Chinola is a nice 5 year old Abyssinian that is ready for a home of her own. She tends to pick the people she really likes and is good with calm children. She is a cool cookie that likes things on the quieter side. Lumpy is a 1 year old Shepherd mix. He is very sweet and likes to go for walks. He can be a bit nervous in new situations so we would like him to meet everyone in the family before going home. He will chase cats so a home with kitties that are “dog-smart” would be best. If either of these pets sound like the one for you, please stop in at the Strunk Road Adoption Center and ask to meet them. You will be glad you did! For more information or questions please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

“Cheyanne” and “Jessie James”. Cheyanne is a 2 year old German Shepherd mix. She is a mellow girl that can be a bit shy. She loves to play with her toys and likes to be petted. She doesn’t like to be bothered while she eats her food or treats, so a home with kids over 8 would be best. Cheyanne needs a home without kitty friends. Jessie James is a beautiful 8 month old kitty. He is super sweet and loves attention. He does have a sensitive tummy and needs to be on a special food for it. Just like his namesake he is a bit of a thief and will steal your heart. If either of these pets sounds like the perfect addition to your family, please stop by the Strunk Road Adoption Center and ask to meet them. You can be the answer to their holiday wish of a forever home. For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

Winston & Toddy

This week we are featuring all 12 of our FIV positive kitties. All of these cats are very sweet and are looking for that family that will give them a chance. They should either be an only cat or with other FIV positive cats. They will all need to be indoor kitties only. This is the season of giving, and there is nothing better than giving one of these wonderful cats that purr-fect home they are wishing for and the 2nd chance they deserve. For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

“Whitney” and “Poppy”. Whitney is a 3 month old kitten that is ready to move on and experience a real home with a real family. She is just one of the many kittens at the shelter waiting for their 2nd chance. Poppy is a 3 year old Chihuahua. She loves to sit in your lap and likes just about everyone she meets. If either of these pets sounds like the perfect match for your home, stop by the Strunk Road Adoption Center and ask to meet them. You will be glad you did! For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200. You could be the answer to their holiday wishes!

“Wilson” and “Baby Girl”. Wilson is a 2 1/2 year old lab mix that LOVES to play. He would also make a great running partner. He his a nice dog and does well with most other dogs but he has a tendency to chase cats so a home without cats is best. Baby Girl is a 7 1/2 year old kitty that is ready for a place to call home. She can be quiet and shy so a home to match her personality is what she is looking for. She does asks for attention, but only when she wants it. Someone with patience to let her bloom would be her favorite. If either of these pets seems like the perfect match for your home, stop by the Strunk Road Adoption Center and ask to meet them. You will be glad you did. For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

“Alec” and “Sybil”. Alec is a 2 year old Chihuahua that likes to cuddle. He enjoys looking out the window as much as sitting in your lap. He can be a bit cautious at first but he warms up. He is looking for a home without small kids. Sybil is a 1 year old beauty of a cat that is friendly and will take all the attention you can give her. She is sweet and ready to move into a forever home of her own. If either of these pets sounds like “THE” one for you, please stop by the Strunk Road Adoption Center and ask to meet them. You can be the 2nd chance they need. For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

“Buddy” and “Grace”. Buddy is a 2 1/2 year old ball of fun. He loves to play fetch and will run as fast as his short legs will let him. He also think squeaky toys are great. Buddy would do best in a home with older kids and not a lot of visitors as he can get a bit nervous around new people. He also needs a home without cats. Grace is a super sweet 5 year old kitty that is looking for a quiet forever home. She likes to be pet and special one-on-one time with her people. She is FIV positive but is doing fabulous in her foster home which she shares with other FIV positive cats. Just let the shelter know you would like to meet her and her foster mom will bring her for a visit. If you have a place in your heart for either of these great pets, please come to the Strunk Road Adoption Center and ask to meet them. You will be glad you did! For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

“Connie” and “Twizzler”.  Connie is a 1 year old kitty that is really ready for a quiet home of her own. The commotion at the shelter is a bit much for her causing her to hide from it. She would be best in a home without small children and with a family that will be patient with her as she finds her way. Twizzler is an 8 year old lab mix that came from a not so great beginning. She is unsure around new people and places, but given time settles into a routine. She will need a special home with people that will give her the time she needs and that will continue to work with her to help her adjust to life in a home. A fenced yard is a must for her. Twizzler would prefer to be the only pet. If you have the heart and home for either of these two special pets waiting for their 2nd chance, please stop by the Strunk Road Adoption Center and ask about them. They are waiting for the love and caring of a real family. For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

“Jack”. Jack is a very friendly 5 year old kitty that can be quite the talker. He will need to stay on a special diet of prescription food to keep him healthy. If you have room in your heart and your home Jack, or any other, great pet awaiting their 2nd chance for a great life, stop by the Strunk Road Adoption Center to meet your new best friend! For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200,

“Tinkerbell”. Tinkerbell is a nice 6 year old kitty that would really prefer the quiet life in a forever home. Shelter life is a bit stressful for her, so she will need time in a new home to adjust and patient people to give her that time. She is truly a diamond in the rough. If you have the place in your heart and home for either of these, or any of the pets at CCHS, please stop in at the Strunk Road Adoption Center. You will be glad you did! For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

“Joplin” and “Missy”. Joplin is a 5 year old pit bull mix. She is a sweet and mellow girl that likes taking walks. She seems to like everyone, but might be too much for cats. Missy is a beautiful 2 1/2 year old gray kitty. She is missing an eye, probably due to an old injury. Because of this, it would be best if she was an inside only cat. Both of these great pets are waiting for their 2nd chance at a great life. If you have room in your heart and your home for either of these, or any of our other great pets, please stop in at the Strunk Road Adoption Center. You will be glad you did! For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

“Tipster”   Tipster is a beautiful 5 year old kitty that has been at the shelter for over 1 1/2 years. He likes attention, but only on his terms. He would do well in a home where he can be his own guy. He does well with other kitties as long as he has space.   If Tipster sounds like a fit for your home (and heart), please stop by the Strunk Road Adoption Center at meet him or any of the other wonderful pets waiting for their 2nd chance at a great life. For more information or questions, please call (716) 665-2209 ext. 200.

New home needed:

Bubba is a 3 year old male Maine Coon mix.

He was found in the bumper of a car.

He seeks your affection but is cautious because he has been exposed to and pursued by dogs.  When he knows he’s safe with you, he’ll approach you for love and hugs.

He is strictly indoors, gets along well with other cats, but not so much with kids.

He is neutered, up to date on shots and ready to be your forever friend.

Call 410-6796. Chad

The following cats need loving homes and we need empty cages for the cats outside to come in out of the cold.  Therefore, throughout January and February, we are reducing the adoption fee of these cats by 50%. Read their stories and make your selection.

"Lainey"  This unique and beautiful calico is mostly orange and white, with black spots on her  face, ears and back.  Born in 2013, Lainey was part of a large cat colony at a trailer park, and after being trapped, has spent most of her life in a cage.  Her “forever” home turned out to be temporary because she wanted affection and would jump to her new owner. The new owner was elderly and  unable to cope with this type of animal.  Lainey has adjusted well to living at the Adoption Center and has always been good with her penmates. She is very friendly with our volunteers, and wants affection. It would be good if she had another cat to pal with, if not, she would like her humans to pal with her.

The “Seaweed Kittens”

These two young cats need a home, but they are not the type to run up to visitors and say, "Pick Me!"   Phillip, the adorable tabby and white, was trapped at the city fishing pier, and was frantic in his efforts to be free. His name is a take-off on Full Up, because when he calmed down, we noticed a bloated stomach that the vet found full of seaweed.  This resourceful guy found a way to keep himself from starvation!  Andrew, a beautiful orange caught a few days later, was not as upset, but greatly resists being touched. Quiet, gentle, and rather somber, these two have never learned to play and enjoy life. Phillip can be persuaded to sleep on your lap while you pet him, but Andrew has not reached that level yet. They need a peaceful, patient home with people who understand their reticence and will give them time to learn to trust and relax.

A New Year, A New Life

Java is a sweet, friendly young spayed female, black with short hair.  She is sweet and pleasant and likes people. However, she has digestive issues and needs a special diet, so she would have to be the only cat in the household or in a controlled environment so she is only able to get her special food. Because she must be separated at our shelter/Adoption Center and is lonely, we are offering her as a special needs cat at a greatly reduced adoption fee, so she will not be constantly confined; we would also like to free up her cage to get other cats out of the cold. Low adoption fee includes a bag of her food.

Karson is about two years old and has beautiful green eyes. He was a very independent stray until he became ill and needed treatment. After being trapped, he was frightened and angry, and would hiss and swat.  Just when we were giving up hope of his becoming an adoptable pet, he started talking to his favorite rescuer and approached to be petted. After that, it was a quick turnaround. Although Karson still has some reservations about being picked up, and does not like to leave his cage where he feels relaxed and safe, he is playful, gets along well with the other cats, and loves to be petted. This handsome guy may need time to adjust to a new home, but soft food (he loves it!) patience, and affection will win him over. Once he gets to trust his new surroundings, he will be a faithful, loving pet.

TABBY CATS:

Research indicates  it was during  the Ottoman Empire that the genetic mutation responsible for the blotched tabby cat coat pattern emerged. This pattern, which is in 80 per cent of present-day cats can be found all over the world. The English term tabby originates from the translation of the French phrase "striped silk taffeta", the root of which is tabis, meaning "a rich watered silk."

Lorelei, a gray, black and brown  tabby with pretty green eyes. Born approximately August 2016.

"Barker" is a short haired gray tabby who is about 1 1/2 years old.  He loves people and attention. Barker is neutered, up to date on his shots, and ready to share your home.

Ricky was found as a stray and is estimated to be a little over a year old. This big guy is very friendly and loving.

Suzie is about two years old. Her owner passed away when she was a year old, and her life changed drastically.  This pretty cat has yellow green eyes, medium long fur, and a tail like a feather! Suzie would probably be best in a home without other pets or young children.

This handsome boy is 11 years old and came to us as an owner surrender. Leo is a friendly cat who would love nothing more than a lap to sit on and a loving home to spend his golden years. As you can see, he's extremely photogenic ! His coat is sleek black. Leo is neutered, up to date on his shots, and ready to be your special mini panther. Because he is a senior, his adoption fee is reduced by 50%.

"Velcro"

When she was about 7 months old, Velcro was trapped and has been with us for almost 1 1/2 years. She has velvety black fur, and beautiful green eyes.  She is a little apprehensive when approached, but loves to be petted and will be a great, laid back pet. Velcro has been in a cage far too long and is getting a little plump.  She needs a forever home and a chance to move around more freely.

Moffitt~This beautiful black tuxedo cat was found with a collar around her neck and leg about a year ago. Efforts to find her owner have been unsuccessful, so she needs a new home. She is estimated to be about four years old, is friendly and pleasant, and seems to get along well with other cats.

Shown here is "Dutchie," a 1 year old black shorthair that the owners had to give up. Dutchie is extremely friendly and very actively seeks attention and petting.  If you are looking for a cat to interact with frequently, Dutchie is an excellent choice.

"Slick" a short-haired black cat,  has black whiskers on the left side of his face, and white whiskers on the right side. He was trapped near a large retail store on a very busy road. Estimated to be about 5 years old, this nice kitty is quiet, but friendly and likes to be petted.

Silas:  This young male was found in a wooded area populated by coyotes.  Since he seems to know humans, we believe he was either "lost or tossed."  All the changes in his life been confusing to him, so he is still a little hesitant and afraid, but he is not aggressive.  In time, with a little love and the chance to feel safe, he will be a very attractive pet.

     "Sparky"

It's hard to believe that this gorgeous long haired gray cat  is approximately 10 yrs old. He's a very playful guy who like toys and attention from people. He has cuddled up to some of our young visitors and been super loving with children. Although he does have a heart murmur, it doesn't seem to affect him at all. He is neutered and up to date on his shots.  Because he is a senior cat, his adoption fee is only half the standard fee. You will be very pleased to have this elegant, friendly cat as part of your family.

Despite the name, Flynn is female.  She is a beautifully marked 10 month old tortie, with lots of orange, and the cutest face. She has really come out of her shell since she came to us, and become very friendly and trusting.  She really enjoys being petted and having her fur brushed, and seems to get along with other cats.

Ricky

This older cat needs a special loving home, and a peaceful, stress free life.  .  Ricky's fur is medium long charcoal with distinctive stripes.  Sometimes he gets scared and growls, but he doesn't mean it.  He has no teeth or front claws, so he couldn't hurt anyone even if he wanted to, which he doesn't. He really just wants to be loved and petted, and purrs when he feelssafe a nd calm and loved. Ricky has tested positive for FIV, (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)  but FIV cannot be transmitted from cat to human or to dogs.  Because he is a "special needs" pet, his adoption fee has been reduced.

Dogs are available for adoption: All dog adoptions require a pre-home visit and references will be checked.

Dusty is a 2 yr old cocker spaniel. He's an energetic boy who would love to have a yard to run and play. He's good with kids and prefers female dogs. No cats. He really loves to be around people so someone who is home a lot would be ideal.

Taz is an approximately 1 yr old  labrador mix. He's extremely friendly and would be a great family dog. Taz is an energetic boy who likes playing catch and running around, and would love an active household.  He is a bit of an escape artist so he needs close supervision.

Button Button is approximately 7yrs old. He's a bit shy so he needs a patient , loving home. He may do best with another dog who is friendly and outgoing.

Fritz is approximately 6 yrs old. He's a bit shy so he needs a patient , loving home. He may do best with another dog who is friendly and outgoing.

Chi Chi is a 6 yr old chihuahua. He's a sweet boy but he takes a bit to warm up to new people. Chi Chi is looking for a loving patient owner who understands his little quirks. He would do well in a quiet, low traffic household. Chi Chi likes to go for rides in the car and going for walks. He likes children although very young children aren't recommended because he tends to get nervous. He is the type of dog that likes to be by his owner, whether sitting on the couch of doing things around the house.

Happy New Year Everyone!

2017 is over, and it was a very good year for adoptions.  263 dogs and puppies made their way to new homes.  If you were one of those who adopted then we hope it is all working out wonderfully, and we would love to see pictures or read about how your new buddy is doing.  If you told others about NCCR, hung up posters (the latest one is attached), donated, volunteered or did something to promote NCCR then we thank you, and the dogs and pups all thank you too!

Open House is this Saturday January 20th from Noon to 3pm.  Are you still working on a New Year's resolution?  Do you have just 3 hours a week that you could spare to become a volunteer.    Walk a hound, lose a pound?  Or simply help with the cleaning, chores, maintenance, vet visits and all the other things that are necessary to keep the dogs healthy and adoptable.  But you must be committed to your schedule; the dogs rely on the volunteers to show up when they say they will!   Volunteer applications can be found online at http://www.caninerescue.org/volunteer/  You'll find volunteering to be very rewarding by not only helping the dogs find their "furever" homes, but by meeting a great group of people who also love dogs.

The shelter is located at 7540 N. Gale St. in Westfield, NY and is open to the public Monday-Saturday from 1-3pm or by appointment by calling (716)326-7297.  Information about NCCR and the dogs can be found online at www.caninerescue.org or follow us on Facebook too at https://www.facebook.com/Northern-Chautauqua-Canine-Rescue-Inc-63822851822/

NCCR is having a Cans For Canines fundraiser and collecting clean, not crushed, nickel deposit cans and bottles.  Bag yours up and bring them to the shelter during open hours during the week or stop by on the 20th; we will have cake and coffee for you as a thank you at the Open House!

Now if we can just find the right home for Sammi.  She's the feral coonhound who arrived last year after our Executive Director spent days tracking her down.   She was found just in time for her to be safe at the shelter and have her 8 puppies.

Sammi is the special dog to be highlighted this month; you might have heard or seen about her already as she's been with us for several months.

Sammi has gone from being a very scared soon-to-be-mom to a much more confident, dog friendly, people friendly girl who is now spayed and ready for a home of her own.  You can read her story here http://www.caninerescue.org/sammi/

Are you confused by what date it is?  Haven't found that perfect calendar for the new year, and it's already mid January?  Then stop by and purchase one of the remaining 2018 NCCR calendars featuring the photos of current or adopted dogs from the shelter and taken by one of the shelter volunteers.  We can even mail them to you if you'd like.  http://www.caninerescue.org/2018-calendars/  The calendars are now  only $8(plus shipping if necessary) and all proceeds benefit the Sampson fund for the care of sick and injured dogs that arrive at the shelter.  http://www.caninerescue.org/donate-2/sampson-fund/

You might have heard about Sammi, who was running wild for the longest time last year, became pregnant, and through the amazing efforts of our Executive Director, managed to be caught just in time to have her puppies at the shelter the end of last year.  All those pups found homes, but Sammi is still here waiting her turn.  She's come such a long way, from being terrified of people, to realizing that we mean no harm to her.  She needs a fenced yard, a loving family who would understand she needs time to adjust to new things, a dog companion to learn from, and a nice couch would be perfect for her!

Do you think any of these dogs might fit into your home and lifestyle?  Or perhaps you can just spread the word about NCCR and the great dogs that are available so other people can see them.    The shelter is located at 7540 N. Gale St. in Westfield and is open Monday-Saturday from 1-3pm or by appointment by calling 716-326-7297 (PAWS).  Most of the dogs can be seen online at www.caninerescue.org.

Maybe you can't adopt but have extra time on your hands? Go to the website and fill out a volunteer application or stop by the shelter during open hours from 1-3pm Monday-Saturday and pick up an application there.   There are a number of ways you can help out either hands on with the dogs weekdays, evenings or weekends or with events, fundraising or other things.   The shelter is located at 7540 N. Gale St. in Westfield and their phone number is 716-326-7297.       You'll make new two and four legged friends for sure!

Have you wondered about how you can help the dogs?

We are always looking for volunteers to work shifts, help at events, even just do yard work.  Haven't got the time to volunteer?  How about helping financially and donating your empty nickel deposit cans and bottles.   Several of the local redemption centers such as Get Your Nickel Back in Fredonia, Don's Car Wash in Lakewood and Farm Fresh Variety Store Bottle & Can Redemption in Jamestown will even take your returns and send us the money!

Another painless way is by shopping via Amazon Smile and designating Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue as your charity of choice.  Amazon donates .5% of your purchases (at no additional cost to you!) to the charity you've chosen.  Every penny counts!

Many of the dogs can be seen online at www.caninerescue.org.  The website lists upcoming events, fundraisers, adoption successes, rabies clinics and other things.  Be sure to check out our Facebook page too; you can easily spread the word about NCCR dogs by liking/sharing their images; it costs you nothing and yet might mean everything to that dog if it helps it find a home.    Dogs can change very rapidly, so if you're looking for something specific, keep checking back!

Come find a new friend, be it a couch potato or a running buddy, we have all shapes, sizes and colors waiting for you!  If you haven't been by the shelter lately, stop on in!  We're located at 7540 N. Gale St. in Westfield and are open Monday-Saturday from 1-3pm or by appointment by calling 716-326-7297.  Most of the dogs can be seen online at www.caninerescue.org or check out our Facebook page too.

As always, we love to hear about any of our dogs that you adopted.  If it was last week, last year or 10 years ago, please drop us an email and a photo.  This is NCCR's 18th year of "helping dogs adopt a human"!  We remember many of the dogs that pass through the doors; your notes, emails and photos help make it all worthwhile!
